Thank you and Merry Christmas!

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us over the past year. 2013 has been a big year for INSP, working to support over 120 street papers and their 28,000 homeless vendors in the UK and around the world. Here are some of our highlights from the year:

Irvine Welsh exclusive Christmas Story

Our ambassador Irvine Welsh (Scottish author of Trainspotting) has written an exclusive story for our street papers to publish during this festive period. The story features Welsh's infamous character Francis Begbie (portrayed by actor Robert Carlyle in Danny Boyle's film adaptation of Trainspotting). The news of the exclusive recently attracted extensive media coverage and featured in most major UK newspapers, on television and online. Read more here. This worldwide exclusive is currently helping our vendors to increase sales at a particularly difficult time of year.

International Street Paper Awards

The 2013 International Street Paper Awards was held on the final night of the conference in Munich. Awards were presented to the winners of ten categories (pictured above). Read more about the winners here.

INSP conference in Munich

In the summer we held our 17th annual conference in Munich in partnership with local street paper and INSP founding member BISS. The focus of this year's event was on sustainability to ensure our street papers continue to best serve their vendors' needs. A record number of people participated in the event, which was attended by over 100 delegates from 50 street papers in 30 countries! Our conference programme and coverage of our conference can all be viewed on our blog.

New INSP Ambassadors

In 2013, Scottish author Irvine Welsh and French journalist Mariane Pearl joined our high-profile supporters. Both were invited to support INSP following exclusive interviews for our news service. Read more here.

Our online news service

Our news service continued to provide street papers with high-quality international content worth over £500,000! Content included exclusive interviews with high-profile individuals, such as Richard Branson and Usain Bolt; a worldwide exclusive short story from Irvine Welsh (more below); content from external media partners, such as Reuters and IPS; and content from within the network adapted by INSP and translated by over 150 volunteer translators.

We would like to thank all our members, external content partners, interviewees, contributors and translators for their support of our news service!

Digital Innovation

Our work supporting street papers to adapt to the digital age made it to the finals of the European Social Innovation Competition, where we were one of ten finalists out of 605 entries! We were also invited to present our digital work at Brand Perfect's Adventures in Publishing event where delegates, all publishing experts, spent the afternoon coming up with ideas on "How we can take the street paper network into the digital age".

Following the pilot of our digital street paper, we have continued to support street papers to trial digital innovations, helping them adapt to the digital age. Some examples include:

Street paper launches in Greece

Shedia (Σχεδία) launched in Athens in February 2013 providing much-needed employment opportunities and support to the recession-struck capital. It will soon expand to Thessaloniki, Greece's second largest city. Read more here.

INSP provides advice, support, resources and editorial content to help groups start new street papers. Speaking about INSP's support, Chris Alefantis (Co-founder of Shedia) said:
"INSP's support has been invaluable to us. Being able to draw from the network's knowledge and experience has truly helped us in preparing as well as possible for the challenges we have faced so far and for the challenges that lie ahead...Together we can make a difference. INSP and its members prove just that."

International Street Paper Vendor Week

In February, we launched our first-ever annual International Street Paper Vendor Week, an international programme of events and activities celebrating street paper vendors and raising awareness of issues related to homelessness and unemployment. The event was a great success with around 8,000 vendors from 46 street papers in 20 countries benefiting from this year's activities!

In Scotland, we organised a series of local events, including a photography exhibition and local vendor parties for 250 Big Issue vendors in Scotland. The Scottish activities were launched by Glasgow MSP Humza Yousaf (pictured right) who spent the afternoon with Big Issue Vendor Peter to find out what it's really like to sell a street paper. In the space of an afternoon, the pair was met by sun, rain, hail and even snow!

You can view coverage of the event on our blog, our Google map of activity and a selection of media coverage.

2014 - our 20th anniversary

Next year we will celebrate INSP's 20th anniversary, as well as our tenth year being based in Scotland! We have many exciting plans, including our second International Street Paper Vendor Week, featuring the first-ever Big Sell-Off; a follow-up to our 2012 independence conversation series; our 18th annual conference in Glasgow in the summer following the Commonwealth Games; our 20th anniversary showcase and lots more...

We need your help!

Please help us to ensure we are able continue supporting our 120 street papers to provide over 28,000 homeless vendors with a means to earn an income and improve their lives. Click here to donate to INSP today!

‘Reaching Out: The theatre of dreams’ republished

Professor Jimmie Earl Perry seeks to change attitudes about HIV/AIDS in South Africa through theatre. The director of The Africa Centre for HIV and AIDS Management’s Educational Theatre and Creative Arts programme is using local actors to put on plays that ‘break the silence’ surrounding the taboo subject of HIV/AIDS.

Earl Perry wants to get the message of HIV/AIDS management out to the Afrikaans community and to the country’s farm workers, hoping he can reach them through entertainment. His plays, Lucky the Hero and Lucky Fish, involve characters whose lives are affected by HIV/AIDS and are staged by young people from the local theatre group in both English and Afrikaans.

The article, by Tarryn Brien of The Big Issue South Africa, was republished in Greek street paper Shedia.

‘Dutch self-image shaken by “Black Pete” debate’ republished

According to folklore, when Saint Nicholas arrives in the Netherlands at the Christmas season, he is accompanied by his servant, Black Pete. At parades and pageants, the part of Black Pete is usually played by a white person in a “blackface” wearing a curly wig and a red-painted mouth.

But the tradition has recently come under fire for being racist, stirring an emotional debate amongst the Dutch, who see themselves as tolerant, cool-headed and committed to social harmony. Many now agree the Black Pete character is offensive but others say banning it would mean the loss of a revered tradition that dates back to the 17th century.

This controversial Reuters article was republished by street paper The Big Issue in the North, based in the north of England.

It can still be downloaded here.

Moby: sounding sensitive’ republished in Greece

Shedia (Greece)
It’s fitting that the album which made Moby a household name at the turn of the millennium was called Play, because the artist approaches his work with a tinker-happy, playfulness that gives his songs an undeniable purity.

His latest album, Innocents, sees him bring together his unique brand of dance music with broken and out-dated equipment, along with some big name cameos providing lyrics and vocals.

Moby spoke to Doug Wallen of The Big Issue Australia about the grind of touring for the best part of two decades and his love for new sounds. The article was republished by Greek street paper Shedia.

The article can still be downloaded here.

„Moby: Klingt vernünftig“ erscheint in Griechenland

‘Investigating Mexico’s drug cartels’ republished

Surprise (Switzerland)
In recent years, the world has watched stunned at the bloodshed in Mexico. In 2006, violence between drug cartels exploded onto Mexico’s streets with armed gangs battling each other for control of a multi-billion dollar trade that has even threatened the nation’s stability. Such has been the scale of violence that an estimated 60,000 people have been killed over the past seven years. The killing spree has been truly horrendous with mass murder, daylight shootings and headless corpses left on streets as regular themes.

At great risk to his own life, UK journalist Ioan Grillo has covered the Mexican drug war since 2000 and his gripping book El Narco provides an extraordinary insight into the violence benighting the nation. Grillo spoke to INSP about reporting the Mexican drug war, the unfathomable brutality of the violence, and his thoughts on legalisation as a route to peace.

The article, by Callum McSorley of INSP, was republished in Swiss street paper Surprise and Chicago-based street paper StreetWise.

It can still be downloaded here.

„Einblick in Mexikos Drogenkartelle“ erscheint in der Schweiz
StreetWise (Chicago, IL, USA)

‘While officials talk, Israelis build’ republished

As Israeli and Palestinian leaders began negotiations towards a peace agreement, Israel took steps to expand its settlements. Indeed, Israel approved construction of nearly 1,000 new housing units in seven West Bank settlements, and it plans to build 900 more units in East Jerusalem.

These on-going and seemingly accelerated efforts to expand Israeli settlements as negotiations re-start show the Israeli government has no intention of uprooting its sprawling settler population, estimated to number more than 600,000 today. Instead, Israel continues – as it has done since the settlements were first established decades ago – to flout international law by actively promoting settlement growth, with a complete disregard for the consequences.

This story, written by Jillian Kestler-D'Amours of IPS, was republished in Ireland’s Big Issue.

The article can still be downloaded here.

Irvine Welsh writes exclusive ‘Begbie’ story to support homeless street paper vendors

Robert Carlyle as Francis Begbie in Danny Boyle's
1996 film Trainspotting (Courtesy of Film4)
Scottish author Irvine Welsh has written an exclusive short story for The Big Issue and other street papers around the world to help tens of thousands of homeless people at Christmas.

Welsh’s new tale is called He Ain’t Lager and is set during a time after his novels Trainspotting and its sequel, Porno.

The story was specially written exclusively for the International Network of Street Papers (INSP), a charity based in Glasgow, Scotland, that supports The Big Issue and 121 other street papers in 40 countries. Welsh is an ambassador for INSP.

The exclusive Christmas story features his infamous character Francis Begbie brilliantly portrayed by actor Robert Carlyle in Danny Boyle’s eponymous film adaptation of the first book in 1996.

Trainspotting was first published in 1993 and catapulted Welsh to international fame after becoming a cult classic. Porno was released in 2002.

Begbie became infamous for his extreme violence in both novels but readers of He Ain’t Lager will be astonished to learn Welsh’s psychotic character has been rehabilitated through art and fallen in love.

The plot centres on Begbie visiting his family at Christmas after being released from prison. His brother Joe is homeless.

Welsh - who lives in Chicago, USA - said there were more revelations about Begbie in his new story and urged people to buy The Big Issue.

He said: “I'm not sure where this (story) came from. I never really know. I just think the character has to be full of surprises and I quite like this little twist in his (Begbie) life. I became an INSP ambassador not because I'm disadvantaged in the current housing market, but privileged by it; I see so many friends struggling to keep a home together, or trying to rebuild one. They deserve the same rights that I enjoy. Homelessness issues are now sadly ubiquitous across the western world, and very much a product of the weak priorities our political leadership has set. The social aspect of housing policy is almost existent, but is in reality how people aspire to live; a home, family, friends, within a community and a concerned citizenry.”

Maree Aldam, general manager of INSP, said: “Interviews and writing by famous names give our network of homeless vendors a big sales boost. When Irvine Welsh gave us an exclusive interview earlier this year, it was published in South Africa, Switzerland, Norway, Denmark, Germany and the US – benefiting thousands of vendors. So we’re delighted that Welsh – now an INSP ambassador – has now chosen to share this instalment of Begbie’s life for the benefit of our street papers. We know that the story of this infamous character will appeal to readers worldwide and therefore help our vendors to earn their own living over the winter months.”

Paul McNamee, editor of The Big Issue, said: “The Christmas period is a key time for The Big Issue and our vendors. As we push for sales to help vendors at the most difficult time of the year, we run a series of bumper seasonal editions. We start next week, in fact, with a Doctor Who special. And we're delighted that Irvine Welsh, who has long been a big supporter of The Big Issue and street papers in general, has come up with a new piece of work for us. It's always a thrill to read anything by Irvine Welsh. On the back of the success of Filth, interest in the great contrarian outsider of modern Scottish literature is heightened and we hope that people will be queuing at their local Big Issue vendor to read what he has created when we run it in a couple of weeks."

Kevin Gopal, editor of The Big Issue in the North, said : “We are really pleased that an author of the stature of Irvine Welsh has recognised the importance of street papers and kindly written this story for us. I'm sure readers will be eager to find out what has happened to such an awfully compelling character as Begbie since we last heard from him in Trainspotting.”

iShack: energy efficient homes for South Africa’s masses

Residents of South Africa’s townships often wait years for affordable, decent housing so researchers at Stellenbosch University designed a cost-effective, energy-efficient shack aimed at improving the living conditions of the nation’s poorest communities. iShack is essentially a redesign of the corrugated iron shacks found in townships but designed along ecological principles to be energy efficient, watertight and thermally insulated

The iShack incorporates waste cardboard and tetra pack in the walls and roof, while the back wall is constructed from straw, builder's lime and earth - all providing cost-effective thermal insulation. Another smart design innovation is the fire retardant paint which has been sprayed on the iShack's' walls and roof - a move the researchers say was taken due to the high fire risk in the area. Aside from improving living standards, the iShack project also has the potential to create a few part-time jobs.

The story was republished by The Big Issue Japan, L'Itinéraire (Canada), Real Change (USA) and Salt Lake Street News (USA).

The story – originally published by The Big Issue South Africa - can still be downloaded here.

'Sir Richard Branson: Hotels on the moon' republished

The Big Issue South Africa
Sir Richard Branson is one of the biggest names in world business. From starting a magazine for students at the age of just 16, to conquering the music industry and attempting to fly around the world in a hot air balloon, the British entrepreneur is famous across for his bold and daring projects. Sir Richard spoke to INSP about his plans to travel into space and his long term aim of seeing a Virgin hotel built on the moon.

Sir Richard said a “great deal of good” has come out of the street paper projects and the fact they are in 40 countries offers some “amazing reach and global impact”.

Sir Richard also a talked about his future plans and said: “We have some truly thrilling plans in the pipeline. Our plan for Virgin Galactic is to create a pioneering and successful business and to kickstart a new industry which could come to define the 21st century in the same way that commercial aviation defined the century before. The launching of satellites into space could enable us to do so much, from reducing solar radiation on earth to providing humanitarian assistance.

The interview with Sir Richard was republished by The Big Issue South Africa, Shedia (Greece), BISS (Germany), Macadam (France), The Big Issue Korea, The Journey (USA), L'Itinéraire - Canada, StreetWise (USA) and =Oslo (Norway).

Faltzkog spoke to Vicky Carroll of The Big Issue UK about the path that led her from singing in front of her bedroom mirror to wowing audiences at the Eurovision song contest. ‘Canada’s unemployed youth: a national crisis’ republished in Megafon

A recent report said that one in five Canadian youths is unemployed, mirroring similar trends in American and European cities. Government-led solutions in Canada often rely on the assumption that most young people have some post-secondary education. But such thinking often ignores young people’s real-life experiences, especially those with no high school diploma.

Yvonne Robertson investigated the issue, interviewing young people who have struggled with both unemployment and underemployment, and looked at possible solutions, including a move towards entrepreneurship in Vancouver, British Colombia.

This contemporary article, by Megaphone in Canada, was republished in the latest issue of Megafon in Norway.

It can still be downloaded here.

„Kanadas arbeitslose Jugendliche: Eine nationale Krise“ erscheint in Megafon

‘Isabel Allende: The day we buried our freedom’ republished

Isabel Allende is one of the most famous authors in the world. She won worldwide acclaim when her first novel, The House of the Spirits, was published in 1982. In addition to launching Allende’s career as a writer, the book established her as a feminist force in Latin America’s male-dominated literary world. Allende’s 20 books have sold more than 57 million copies. Her latest novel is called Maya’s Notebook.

Amnesty International interviewed Allende to mark the 40th anniversary of the 1973 military coup in Chile, which led to the death of her father’s cousin, Salvador Allende, who was elected Chile’s president in 1970. For years after the coup, Chile was a place of fear, torture and massacres when at least 3000 people were murdered.

The piece by Amnesty was republished by the Swiss street paper Surprise.

‘Volunteering abroad: Who is it really helping?’ republished in Ireland

Every year an estimated 1.6 million people – usually from the global north, travel to the third-world to volunteer and “make a difference”. The word “volunteer” has connotations of charity, benevolence and selflessness.

But in reality, many volunteer tour operators have little to do with such notions and are simply out to make substantial sums of money out of others’ good will. INSP’s Amy MacKinnon wrote about her own experiences of volunteering in Cambodia and a new organisation that ensures volunteers actually benefit host nations.

This eye-opening article was republished in the latest edition of Ireland’s Big Issue.

The article can still be downloaded here.

‘From homelessness to a night at the Oscars’ republished

As a homeless girl sleeping rough in a US park, Inocente dreamed of a better life. But she never imagined that one day she’d be on stage at the Oscars and be kissed by Daniel Day Lewis.

Living as an undocumented immigrant in America after her abusive father was deported, Inocente’s life was harsh but things changed for the better after she began to paint. Her artwork drew the attention of documentary makers, Sean and Andrea Nix Fine, who filmed Inocente for 18 months, documenting her artwork and her strained relationship with her mother. In February, the resulting footage won an Oscar for best documentary short, championing Inocente as an advocate for homeless youth and the positive role arts can play.

This uplifting article, written by Rosette Royale of US street paper Real Change, was republished by Street Roots in Portland, Oregon, USA.

The article can still be downloaded here

‘Eve Ensler: on cancer and rape in the Congo’ republished in Macedonia

Situated in the heart of sub-Saharan Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is a country that’s both green and red at the same time. Possessing some of the globe’s most valuable mineral resources, it is also home to violence and disease in a conflict that has resulted in the deaths of more than 5 million people.

The Journal of American Medical Associations reported in 2010 that 40 percent of women in the Eastern Congo have experienced rape and/or sexual violence. The UN says the figure is the highest percentage in the world.

Eve Ensler, American playwright, author and activist, famous for her play, The Vagina Monologues, went to DRC to try to help the victims of rape. She spoke to Real Change in Seattle about her new book – In the Body of the World: A Memoir - which documents her experiences there.

This shocking article was republished by the Macedonian street paper, Lice v lice.

Terre di Mezzo’s ‘Philosopher on the line’ republished in the UK

According to Italian tight-rope walker, Andrea Loreni, life balancing on a rope suspended high above the ground is relatively straightforward: “You’ve made one decision, a big one, and then you set off…

“That’s all it is,” says this extraordinary artist and philosophy graduate who says that his two fields of expertise are not too dissimilar. Loreni spoke to Italian street paper Terre di Mezzo about balance, uncertainty and truth.

This insightful interview with the Italian daredevil - who holds the Italian record for high rope walking - was republished by UK street paper The Big Issue in the North.

The Big Issue in the North.

IPS story “Alberta’s oil sands bring jobs, services and despair” republished

While the expansion of the tar sands of Athabasca, Alberta, Canada has brought jobs and economic stability to the indigenous community of Fort Chipewyan, development has also brought cultural crisis and despair.

The community has witnessed its local caribou herds threatened with extinction, a decline in the number of migratory birds, and the increase of certain types of cancer. There has also been an increase in drug abuse and alcoholism among residents of the isolated town who work for the oil industry which, critics say, is a reaction to the destruction of the Athabasca land and heritage.

This troubling story was republished by The Big Issue in the North (UK).
