Hechoen Bs. As.has been recognised by Buenos Aires' city council as Outstanding Personality of the City in the social field. Inspired by street papers like The Big Issue after a trip to London, Merkin’s aim in creating the Argentinian magazine was to help people help themselves. The award recognises her contributions to homeless and unemployed people of the city, providing both work and inspiration. Employment through Hecho en Bs. As. is open to anyone, giving what Merkin calls ‘a different identity’ to anyone who needs it. The magazine has employed up to two hundred active vendors and covers subjects from science to farming.
