Nobel Peace Laureate Aung Sung Suu Kyi is a beacon of hope in military-ruled Myanmar and, indeed, around the world. Nicknamed “The Lady”, she founded the National League for Democracy (NLD) in the late 1980s but – despite campaigning peacefully – was placed under house arrest from 1989 to 2011. Many members of the NLD were also arrested and tortured during this time.
Now free, Suu Kyi is set to stand in the 2015 election, with the aim of removing the government of President Thein Sein, but some fear this move from activist to politician will sully her reputation. Indeed, the enduring image of The Lady as a champion of rights in the Gandhian mold is now being challenged by the more practical image of Suu Kyi the politician.

‘Aung Sung Suu Kyi: Von Aktivismus zu Politik und Realpolitik’ neu aufgelegt
Die Friedensnobelpreisträgerin Aung Sung Suu Kyi trägt die Hoffnungen vieler in der Militärdiktatur Myanmar, und auch weltweit. Sie gründete in den späten 1980ern den NLD (Nationalen Demokratiebund) und wurde mit ihren friedlichen Protestaktionen als “The Lady” bekannt; aber trotz ihres gewaltfreien Ansatzes wurde sie von 1989 bis 2011 unter Hausarrest gestellt. Viele Mitglieder des NLD wurden in dieser Zeit ebenso festgenommen und auch gefoltert.
Heute ist Suu Kyi frei und hat vor, sich als Kandidatin den Wahlen 2015 zu stellen - mit dem Ziel, die Regierung des Präsidenten Thein Sein zu stürzen. Manche Kritiker befürchten aber, dass ein Wandel von Aktivistin zu Politikerin ihren Ruf als Verfechterin der Menschenrechte nach dem Vorbild Gandhis ruinieren könnte - und von einem neuen Bild, Suu Kyi als praktische Politikerin, verdrängt werde.
