Highlights from our News Service

INSP's 'big freeze' report  in Street Sense, Washington DC.
Our report about deaths amongst homeless people as a result of the extreme cold weather got picked up widely in the US. European street paper editors contributed to the piece, with the worst casualties reported from Ukraine and other Eastern European countries.Street papers Street Roots (Portland),Street Sense (Washington), Street Wise (Chicago) and Homeward Street Journal (Sacramento) ran the story. In Europe, the piece also got republished from Germany to Portugal.

Stories about the Roma community are of interest not only to European street papers, but also to readers in Japan. The Big Issue Japan republished two remarkable stories from colleague paper Fifityfifty in Germany. After making a portrait of their Roma vendor Maria, editor Hubert Ostendorff made the journey back to Romania to see Maria's roots. His report from Eastern Romania, together with Maria's vendor profile, featured on the pages of The Big Issue Japan in January.

Also on the INSP News Service this month was a special report from India. The world's largest democracy is reaching milestone after milestone, from record-breaking economic growth to the recent eradication of polio. Our editor Danielle Batist reported from IT capital Bangalore, where millions still struggle to share in the success. The pieces got picked up by street papers as well as mainstream press outlets in the UK and Eastern Europe.

Street papers report on homeless deaths in freezing winter

Unsere Reportage über Todesfälle unter Obdachlosen als Folge der extremen Kälte wurde in den USA von vielen übernommen. Europäische Straßenzeitungsredakteure trugen zu dem Artikel bei, wobei die höchsten Opferzahlen aus der Ukraine und anderen osteuropäischen Ländern gemeldet wurden. 

Die Straßenzeitungen Street Roots (Portland), Street Sense (Washington), Street Wise (Chicago) und das Homeward Street Journal (Sacramento) brachten den Artikel. Auch in Europa wurde die Reportage von Deutschland bis Portugal gedruckt.

New York banker turned Occupy-protesting Hindu monk features in Austrian street press

The story about a former New York investment banker who gave it all up to become a Hindu monk made it as far as Austria. Rasanath Das led Occupy Wall Street protesters in meditation until police cleared their camp at Zuccotti Park. The Reuters story was made available in English and German. Street paper Megaphon republished this extraordinary tale, see the clipping here.

Der Artikel über einen ehemaligen Investment-Banker aus New York, der alles aufgab, um Hindu-Mönch zu werden, verbreitete sich bis nach Österreich. Rasanath Das meditierte mit Demonstranten der "Occupy Wall Street"-Bewegung, bis die Polizei deren Camp im Zuccotti Park räumte. Die Story der Nachrichtenagentur Reuters haben wir auf Englisch und Deutsch zur Verfügung gestellt. Auch die Straßenzeitung "Megaphon" brachte diese außergewöhnliche Geschichte. Fa’ La Cosa Giusta!

In 2004, Italian street paper Terre di Mezzo launched Fa’ La Cosa Giusta! - an annual event on sustainable living, ethical consumerism and social enterprise. 

Since then the Fa’ La Cosa Giusta! has been gone from  strength  to strength each year and is now the biggest event of its kind in Italy. Read more

The Big Issue Japan features German Roma article

Stories about the Roma community are of interest not only to European street papers, but also to readers in Japan. The Big Issue Japan republished two remarkable stories from colleague paper Fifityfifty in Germany.

Artikel über die Roma sind nicht nur für europäische Straßenzeitungen interessant, sondern auch für Leser in Japan. "The Big Issue Japan" brachte zwei bemerkenswerte Artikel von den Kollegen der deutschen Straßenzeitung "Fiftyfifty".

Nachdem er ein Porträt von Maria, eine Roma und Straßenzeitungsverkäuferin, verfasst hatte, reiste Herausgeber Hubert Ostendorff nach Rumänien, um Marias Wurzeln nachzugehen. Seine Reportage aus dem Osten Rumäniens , erschien zusammen mit Marias Verkäufer-Porträt im Januar im "Big Issue Japan".

Desmond Tutu's letter to his young self inspires readers

Desmond Tutu's letter to his younger self touched readers from South Africa to Britain. The Big Issue UK managed to ask the Archbishop the question: If you could write a letter to your 16 year old self, what would you say and what advice would you give? Tutu picked up his pen and took a trip down memory lane. The Editor of The Big Issue South Africa did not hesitate to take the story from our newswire and publish it in their latest edition. Das Magazin "The Big Issue UK" schaffte es, dem Erzbischof die folgende Frage zu stellen: Wenn Sie einen Brief an ihr 16-jähriges Ich schreiben könnten, was würden Sie sagen und welchen Rat würden Sie sich selbst geben? Tutu griff zum Kugelschreiber und stellte sich der Reise in seine eigene Vergangenheit. New intern at INSP News Service

Our new News Service intern has started with us this week. Charlie Farrally has finished his internship with us and Laura Smith will be with us for the next six months. Laura studied Journalism at Strathclyde University in Glasgow.
